KD 11m spent on needy families Panel eyed to review activities of co-ops

KUWAIT CITY, Aug 25:  The Ministry of Social Affairs and Labor has, so far, spent KD 11.365 million in providing assistance to needy families, reports Al-Qabas daily quoting Director of the Family Welfare Department Munirah Al-Fadhli.
Al-Fadhli said 23 sections of the populace — around 42,218 people — has been benefiting from the financial assistance, adding the government retrieved KD 41,540 given to some people by mistake.  She affirmed the ministry is keen on protecting public funds and stressed the need to approve the Public Assistance Law, which had earlier been forwarded to the National Assembly for deliberation.
Explaining the ministry has no authority to increase the financial assistance fund, Al-Fadhli said this is under the jurisdiction of the Cabinet and declared through an Amiri decree.  She stressed the ministry cannot increase the rent allowance to more than KD 100 for Kuwaiti divorcees because their former husbands should be responsible for their accommodation and their children.
Meanwhile, Minister of Social Affairs and Labor Mohammed Al-Afasi is expected to issue a decision to form a committee, which will review the activities of cooperative societies in the country, reports Al-Dar daily.
The daily quoting reliable sources affirmed the decision entails forming a committee to monitor activities at the cooperative societies, while obliging employees there to provide all required documents to facilitate the work of the committee. It will then submit a report on every single cooperative society to the concerned department, after the final report has been completed.
