‘Hi-tech’ wiretaps in telecom units at border posts destroyed Detectives summon company’s officials for interrogation
KUWAIT CITY, Aug 22: Personnel from the State Security General Directorate are said to have dismantled sophisticated equipment which was being used as wiretaps at a number of border posts along the Northern Kuwaiti border, reports Al-Qabas daily quoting a knowledgeable security source.
The same source said these hi-tech wiretaps were planted in the communication devices by one of the major companies offering telecommunications services to strengthen the mobile phones network in Umm Al-Qasr, Abdali and Khabari centers.
The source quoting the State Security personnel said these devices contain chips carrying a PIN number to enable the caller to listen to what is going on at the center and pick up radio signals to and from control room.
The source added that detectives have dismantled more than 10 devices that were installed at the sectors of Umm Qasr, Abdali and Khabari and summoned the officials of the concerned telecommunications company for interrogation.
Unaware
However, the officials are said to have insisted they were unaware of these devices. The officials call it a ‘technical error’ which happened without the knowledge of the company officials.
Police have also summoned a number of company technicians for investigation — since it is they who have installed the equipment at the border posts — in addition to people who are responsible for maintenance.
The source pointed out police detectives visited the border posts to ensure they are free of these devices.
