Many held as police step up crackdown to curtail begging MP’s relative in major residence permit fraud

KUWAIT CITY, Aug 19: Capital Governorate securitymen arrested four female beggars after intensifying efforts to eliminate begging, especially during the holy month of Ramadan.
Security sources revealed the Ministry of Interior formed several teams tasked to eradicate the phenomenon of begging in the country at the beginning of Ramadan, since the country has many charity institutions that provide various forms of assistance to the needy.
The ministry has warned against the prevalence of begging in Kuwait, asserting that it will continue to take the necessary steps to address the issue.
Earlier, the Security Information Department at the Ministry of Interior said Wednesday police patrols have been increased at several commercial markets in the country to stamp out the menace of beggars who visit the country to beg for alms during the holy month of Ramadan, reports Al-Anba daily.
 During a campaign which was led by Director-General of the Capital Security Directorate Major-General Tareq Hammad in coordination with the concerned government security authorities, police have arrested a number of people for begging and referred them to the authorities.
The department added the security campaigns are being conducted upon instructions from the Assistant undersecretary for General Security Affairs Major-General Khalil Al-Shamali who is said to have issued instructions to all security directorates in all governorates to form security teams to arrest the beggars who take advantage of Ramadan to collect money through various false means.

MP’s relative in fraud: An unidentified female employee of the Farwaniya Immigration Department, believed to be a relative of an unidentified MP, has been detained for interrogation for allegedly completing 400 transactions without the health insurance cover, for one of her relatives, reports Al-Shahed daily.
The fraud was discovered by one of the officials of the Department and it has been reported there is pressure from some MPs to ‘shelve’ the issue.
According to sources each transaction should have carried the documents showing the applicants have paid the KD 100 each insurance cover while renewing the residence permits of 400 people.
The employee was remanded for interrogation after the official complained to the Director-General of the Immigration and Investigations Department.

Kuwaiti flees ‘corruption’: A Kuwaiti man, head of a division at one of the Municipality branches is said to have left the country to save his life from ‘goons’, reports Alam Alyawm daily.
This happened when the man discovered 50 forged health certificates among restaurant workers. He wrote a report and submitted it to the concerned authorities for legal action. However, he was shocked when some people started calling him to shelve the issue and threatened to cause him harm.
When he pursued the matter, he received another call, and the caller at the other allegedly identified himself as a police officer.
The caller advised the man to drop the complaint and forget about it and reportedly threatened to kill him if he did not oblige.
The man approached senior people but to no avail. Everywhere we went he found obstacles. The only option left for him was to leave the country to save his life.

Egypt arrests thieves: The Egyptian security authorities are said to have arrested the thieves who had earlier broken into the villa of five Kuwaiti students in the ‘Tenth of Ramadan City’ tied their feet and hands behind their backs and stolen $1,200, 1,400 Egyptian pounds, nine cell phones and two laptop computers, reports Al-Rai daily.
One of the students Duaij Al-Shimmari told the daily Wednesday one of the victims was surprised when he received a call from the Egyptian security officer saying the thieves had been arrested by the police.
The thieves were allegedly caught when they were attempting to sell the loot.
According to the officer the Egyptian police have also found with the thieves arms and ammunition. The daily added the Egyptian security authorities have requested the victims to come to Egypt to identify and take possession of their belongings.

Call traders nabbed
: The Jahra police Thursday raided three apartments in Jahra and arrested some Asians for stealing telephone lines, reports Al-Nahar daily.
According to a security source the Jahra police acting on a tip-off put the apartments under surveillance which were being rented by a Bangladeshi man to carry out the illegal activities.
When police arrested the Bangladeshi, they found in his possession scores of cell phones and state-of-the-art technology which he used to steal government lines to offer overseas call services to local residents for a throwaway price. During interrogations the man admitted to the charge and led police to his two accomplices. He has been referred to the concerned authorities.
