Municipality under fire ‘Waste not recycled’
KUWAIT CITY, Aug 16: MP Shuaib Al-Muwaizri criticized Kuwait Municipality’s handling of the cleaning file, saying the country is lagging behind in this field among other GCC nations despite spending massive amount of money on cleaning activities, reports Al-Seyassah daily. He also rued that the country is not recycling waste despite being the highest producer of waste.
The MP alleged that there are lapses in the method of floating cleaning contracts. He further mentioned that Kuwait Municipality delayed in awarding the contract and that the Central Tenders Committee (CTC) demanded cancellation of the contract due to the high costs quoted by companies. He noted that a ministry inserted new conditions in the contract during tender-floating like use of satellite in cleaning activities, raise in salaries of workers from KD 40 to KD 60 in line with the new private sector law, as well as upgrading of vehicles and equipment.
He suggested that Kuwait Municipality award the project of constructing a waste recycling plant to a renowned international company through BOT system. He said government should grant the company a plot of land free-of-charge for the activity. “The company should be allowed to gather waste and garbage from across the country for free and be allowed to recycle it for its own benefit.
The company should continue to offer the service and enjoy benefits therein for 25 years before government takes over its ownership,” he added.
