‘Australian meat should be sold for KD 1.250, strict eye on butchers’ Gang selling expired items busted

KUWAIT CITY, Aug 7: A sudden inspection tour by a team of commercial supervisors from Ministry of Commerce and Industry to the old Jahra market exposed a gang specialized in marketing expired items, and making up special lists for the prices of commodities, reports Al-Seyassah daily.
The tour, which targeted the fruit, vegetables and meat shops, was in line with the directives issued by Assistant Undersecretary for Commercial Surveillance Ali Al-Baghli.
For his part, member of the team Hamid Al-Zufairi said the Inspection Department is keen on applying law, in their bid to pursue violators.

The team issued several citations against items devoid of information on their labels which they believe had expired, indicating the traders are specialized in displaying spoiled items not valid for human consumption.
Meanwhile, another teammate, Eid Al-Rasheedi stressed that butchers will be subjected to continuous monitoring, due to the manner by which they manipulate the variety of meat in the market and countries they had been imported from. He noted the butchers are not committed to the prices stipulated by Ministry of Commerce and Industry, wherein one kilo of Australian meat should be sold at 750 fils. A kilo of Australian meat should be sold at one dinar and 250 fils, he noted.

Al-Rasheedi revealed that butchers control the local market and deceive customers by selling Australian meat to them as local meat. He said one butcher had openly displayed the price of meat, in an effort to dupe customers, who are made to believe the list is official. The team is expected to intensify its inspection activities, particularly in Ramadan, to control corruption.
