Official warns against right of Kuwaiti women to sponsor non-Kuwaiti husbands

KUWAIT CITY, Aug 6: A high-ranking security official has warned against the dire consequences of granting Kuwaiti women married to non-Kuwaitis the right to sponsor their children and spouses, reports Al-Wasat daily.
Emphasizing the need to implement strict regulations to prevent any untoward incident, the official contended there might be problems in the future because the children will grow up in Kuwait, get married and have their own offspring whose legal status will become another debatable issue. He said in case the Kuwaiti mother is still alive by that time, the number of sponsorship slots she requires becomes double.
In another development, Al-Jarida daily has reported that the General Department for Passports and Citizenship Affairs has yet to issue new passports to Kuwaitis, whose passports have expired, putting them in a difficult situation.
Sources from the department blamed the French company, which produces the passports, as it has not yet delivered the requested passports in spite of the increasing demand this summer.
On the other hand, several citizens have complained that it usually takes the department 40 days to process the travel document applications.
When asked why they did not order a large number of passports, since summer is also the travel season in Kuwait, the officials claimed this is not advisable as the quality of the passports will be sacrificed in favor of quantity.
