Co-operatives urged not to exploit customers: Kandari Municipality to focus on food safety

KUWAIT CITY, July 30: Undersecretary at the Ministry of Social Affairs and Labor Mohammad Al-Kandari held a meeting with the head of the Cooperative Societies Union Dr Hussain Al-Duwaihis and heads of all cooperative societies to discuss a work plan for Ramadan and sort pricing issues, reports Al-Anba daily.

The undersecretary asked the societies to sell products at prices closest to their original value and instructed them not to exploit customers during promotional festivals. He also urged them to treat all customers equally without differentiating between shareholders and others.
Al-Kandari stated that almost all cooperative societies updated their records at the ministry and registered all employees in the new automation system of the ministry. This helped in renewing employees’ residences, he said, adding a specific location was allocated for cooperative societies to process their transactions.

Meanwhile, referring to differences in prices of commodities in different cooperative societies during promotional festivals, Al-Duwaihis said it occurs to lack of clarity in marketing policy. He added that a team comprising of members from the ministry and the union has been formed to study the extent of commercial exploitation during festivals. He further revealed that the price monitoring committee fixed the prices of 300 products.

Meanwhile, Kuwait Municipality implemented monitoring measures concerned with food safety during the holy month of Ramadan, Municipality Director General Ahmad Al-Subeih said recently.
Al-Subeih told KUNA that the meetings grouping municipality’s officials tackled food safety, licenses, inspection campaigns, insuring the safety of food imported, along with measures taken in case of violations.

All affiliate bodies implemented monitoring procedures, he said, and called on consumers to check expiry dates of items purchased and file complaints to municipality’s emergency and complaints centers distributed all over the country.

In order to accommodate with the increased demand on food during Ramadan and Eid, municipality increased the number of food inspectors, butchers, veterinarians, etc.
He added that municipality’s performance is evaluated regularly to ensure food safety and the well being of citizens.

Municipality’s departments affiliated with food safety conduct regular inspection campaigns on factories, warehouses, restaurants, markets, and is responsible for issuing food safety licenses, he noted.
