KTS slams ‘grilling’ request on Umm Al-Haiman pollution Govt urged to open office for MPs transactions KUWAIT CITY, July 6: The real motive behind the submission of a grilling request on the rising pollution levels in Umm Al-Haiman was to embarrass senior political officials in the country, not to push for the implementation of genuine reforms to end the suffering of residents in the area, reports Al-Hurriya daily quoting the Kuwait Transparency Society (KTS).
In a press statement recently, the society argued the failure of the inquest necessitates the activation of constitutional tools in taking serious reformative steps, instead of diminishing its importance.
On the other hand, the society also denounced the action taken by MP Dulaihi Al-Hajri against Health Minister Dr Hilal Al-Sayer, who rejected an overseas treatment application, indicating some MPs have been interfering in the overseas treatment file to serve their electoral interests.
He condemned the use of political blackmail in dealing with this issue, in addition to the depletion of public funds, while praising the stand of Al-Sayer as he has continued to thwart attempts to use ‘wasta’ (influence) in the processing of overseas treatment applications.
Commenting on the spread of articles deemed offensive to judges on the Internet, the society warned against the dire consequences of this behavior.
It also stressed the need to speed up the approval of a draft bill on electronic crimes submitted by the Public Prosecution two years ago.
On the recurrent power outages at various locations in the country during summer, the KTS attributed this to the Ministry of Electricity and Water’s inability to impose penalties on individuals and companies, which do not carry out the necessary maintenance works.
Meanwhile, the government is pressing for an office to be opened at the National Assembly to carry out the MPs’ transactions, reports Al-Anba daily.
The daily quoting reliable sources noted undersecretaries at the ministries and assistant undersecretaries in the state are exerting efforts to complete transactions presented by the MPs, although the task is not within their jurisdiction.
The office, if opened, will facilitate the completion of transactions, whereas the undersecretaries and assistant undersecretaries could focus on implementation of the development plan during the summer, considering the government’s intention to present a semi-annual report at the first session of the parliament next October, sources indicated.
