‘Necessary steps taken to select op consultant for metro project’ Local, int’l firms participate in bidding: Awadhi

KUWAIT CITY, June 23: The Technical Department at Kuwait Metro Company has been taking the necessary steps to select the operations consultant for Kuwait Metro Project, says General Manager of the company Eng Khalid Abdul-Wahad Al-Awadhi. Speaking to reporters after the general assembly meeting of the company Wednesday, Al-Awadhi disclosed several local and international companies participated in the bidding for the project, which closed on May 27. He said the company will most likely announce the winning bid after Ramadan.

Al-Awadhi affirmed the general assembly approved a proposal to increase the company’s capital. He explained the company will issue five million shares, worth KD 500,000, at 100 fils per share. He added the company has presented initiatives for three projects - Kuwait metro, railway, and truck and bus stations - to the Technical Department. Confirming the government is interested in the project, Al-Awadhi revealed a company will be formed soon in which 50 percent of the shares will be offered for public subscription to citizens, while the remaining percentage will be divided between the investors and government. He clarified the company has right to own 10 percent of the shares and it can use other companies to bid for more shares.

Stating the estimated cost of the Kuwait Metro Project is KD 15 million per kilometer, Al-Awadhi said the internal lines will reach 550 kilometers, covering the northern and southern parts of the country, in addition to the airport, seaport and major railway lines. He revealed the railway project will cost KD 4.5 million per kilometer and it will be 980,000 meters long, linking Kuwait to Oman. Al-Awadhi added the implementation of the GCC railway project will start in 2017. He said this project is about one million meters long, while the stations will accommodate a large number of trucks and buses with relaxation areas, maintenance and other related services.
