Senior officials, female staffer, diplomat in major visa scandal

KUWAIT CITY, June 20: Coast Guard rescued three Kuwaitis in their 30s from a boat which sank at sea Saturday, after the officers received a signal from the boat, requesting for assistance.
They rushed to the location and rescued the citizens. Owner of the boat stressed they were surprised to discover the leakage, and before long, the boat had sunk.

Top brass in visa scam: The General Immigration Department has referred a police Lieutenant Colonel, a police officer (head of investigation section at the Ministry of Interior, a female employee of the ministry and a Jordanian man to the concerned authorities for interrogation, reports Al-Qabas daily.
This happened because during a routine review of transactions processed by the Citizen’s Service Offices showed the assistant director of the office had issued commercial visas to 54 women, citizens of countries which are officially banned from entry into Kuwait.
The visas were applied by a beauty salon owned by a police officer (head of investigation department) and the transactions were processed by the female employee who claims she put a footnote on each transaction stating that it was done upon approval of her superior.
The daily also said the visa documents were submitted by a Jordanian company representative who at the time of submitting the documents claimed he was a GCC citizen and used a forged ID to stake his claim.
However, investigations have revealed the Jordanian is co-owner of the beauty salon and the commercial visit visas were later transferred to work permits by some influential people in the Ministry of Social Affairs and Labor.
The daily added it is surprising a diplomat from an unidentified country has intervened and requested the authorities to free the three persons saying he owns the salon and that the transactions were processed according to law.

Murder suspected: Police are investigating death of an unidentified youth whose remains were found behind an unidentified private society, reports Al-Rai daily.
However, initial Forensic reports show the youth died of an overdose of drugs. The report also shows he was mercilessly beaten prior to his death. Police have not ruled out murder. Investigations into the incident are continuing.

Drunkard fights with faithful: Police have arrested an unidentified youth for drinking alcohol and fighting with worshippers inside a mosque, reports Al-Shahed daily.
According to the daily the drunkard entered a mosque in Bayan when the faithful were getting ready for Fajr prayers. When they got the smell of alcohol coming from the mouth of the youth, they asked him to leave the mosque. Instead of obeying, he picked up a fight and attacked some of the worshippers.
They summoned the police and handed him over to the security authorities.

Officer smuggling phones: Guards at the Deportation Center are said to have arrested a First Sergeant for attempting to smuggle two cell phones into the facility, reports Al-Anba daily.
During interrogation the officer said he wanted to sell the phones to two Arabs for KD 220 each.
Without going into details the daily said the officer has admitted to smuggling phones on earlier occasions.

Good turn deserves another: A Kuwaiti citizen has appealed to the Minister of Health to instruct the Adan hospital administration to treat his Ethiopian housemaid in the intensive care unit, reports Al-Shahed daily.
It has been reported the citizen made the request when he was informed that the maid would be discharged from the hospital although she is in coma. He also said he is ready to bear all the expenses for her treatment.
The man added the maid was run over by an unidentified motorist when she put her life in danger and saved his son who had run onto the road.


Boats on fire: Acting on information firemen rushed to South Surra and put out fire to a number of fiberglass boats inside a makeshift workshop in front to the house of a Kuwaiti man, reports Al-Qabas daily.
According to eyewitness reports the boats have been damaged but no casualties have been reported.
The daily quoting security sources said the Kuwaiti was using the open ground in front of his house as workshop to repair boats. The cause of the fire is not known. However, firemen have found some inflammable substances inside the garage.
