Wataniya Telecom lead FBAA opener Hankook Tires collect landslide victory over SK Engineering in Ladies A KUWAIT CITY, June 14: Wataniya Telecom players showed the stuff they are made of as they scored 27 wins and 77 points to take the lead in the recently- opened 16th Filipino Badminton Association in Ahmadi (FBAA) 3rd “Hankook Tires Cup” at the Fahaheel Sports Center Friday. Hankook Tires were placed 2nd with 25 wins and 75 points and close on their trail with the same number of wins were Worley Parsons Resources and Energy with 74 points. SK Engineering and Construction had 21 wins and 63 points while at the bottom were Western Union Money Transfer with 14 wins and 56 points.
FBAA President Ronald Margate along with his team of dedicated officials has once again organized these badminton games not only to promote sportsmanship among its members but also strengthen camaraderie, family bonding and friendship within the community.
Hosted by FBAA beauties Dianne Lapason and Cathy Lesaca, the event started off with the presentation of teams: Hankook Tires, Worley Parsons Resources and Energy, Wataniya Telecoms, Western Union Money Transfer and SK Engineering and Construction.
A solemn prayer led by Claudette Farthing was followed by the acknowledgement of the sponsors: Almailem Tires, exclusive distributors of Hankook Tires, Worley Parsons Resources and Energy through its Project Director Martin Davies and Project Finance and Admin Manager Richard Ferfon, Vangie Gernale and Marimel Labastida from Western Union Money Transfer, SK Engineering and Construction GC24 Project through CK Lee-Project Director, SK An-PCM Manager and SH Lee from Cost Department, Hamad Al-Matar Senior Public Relations Executive, Mirna H. Jaber – Senior Public Relations Executive and Federick Blanco Retail Executive Al-Kout Branch from Wataniya Telecom.
Meanwhile, FBAA honored the winners of the recently-concluded “Goodyear Tires Badminton Cup” 2-Day Tournament. In Men’s A, Gaurav Joshi and William Naoe received the highest honour while Sherwin Felizardo and Mike Florendo were 2nd best, Robert Gubat and Arjay Lesaca walked home with the crown in Men’s B / Ladies A category while runners-up were Rio Ferrer and Aileen Perez, Ladies A / B event championship trophies were given to Imee Castro and Maricel Culangan while Jessica Magallanes and Abi Sedik collected the runners-up award.
In Mixed Doubles C, newcomer Marianne Salunga and Veronica Garcia took the top award while Benedict Garcia and Freddie Ocampo were 2nd best. In Men’s Beginners, Mathew Ooman and Keith Lawson took the title while JD Omara and Robin Gubat received the 1st runners-up trophy. In the Ladies Beginners event Shirley Iglesias and Vervil Estrecho walked home with the crown awhile Annie Centeno and Catherine Punzalan were given the 1st runners-up award.
On the other hand, one of FBAA’s loyal members Joshua Lagran guided the Oath of Sportsmanship while the President declared the tournament open.
Rules
The FBAA Technical Committee has been formed for the smooth implementation of the game rules, complaints and inquiries of the Team Captain can only be forwarded to the technical committee assigned to each category and composed of Leaders and Assistants respectively; Leeforp and Jong in Men’s A, Ryan and Tony Valdez in Men’s B, Arjay and Aldrin in Men’s C, Dianne and Marlad in Ladies A, Ness and Maggie in Ladies B, Janette and Allen in Mixed C, with Cathy and Hans in the Beginners category.
Each of the team is composed of 4 players and required to play a total of 10 games in the 6 categories (Men’s A, Men’s B – Ladies A, Men’s C, Ladies A, Ladies B and Mixed C) with the scoring system based on the accumulated number of matches won and totals set points in the elimination round.
After this the top four teams in each category will move to semifinals based on the total matches and total points achieved. Semifinals will be based on Rank 1 vs. Rank 4 and Rank 2 vs Rank 3. Winners in this round will then advance to the Finals.
FBAA organizers have decided that a 15-15 per set game will be applied in the elimination, semis and final matches wherein in case of a tie at 14-all a slide 2 points advantage wins the game or set. If in case players are still tied at 18-all, the first to reached 19 points wins the set or game except for the beginners class where slides are not applicable.
The total matches won and total points gained (Set) will be applied in case of a tie, however in the event that two of the teams still being tied the Highest Total Scores of their games will be the basis of breaking the tie while the same pattern will be applied in case three of the teams are tied but the scores of last two matches can also be considered to break the tie.
A 5-minute default rule will be applied. In case of a no show by any one of the players, the concern teamed is only allowed 2 minutes to designate a player who will substitute the absent player.
The team can assign an upgrade on a player only once. If a player does not show up, one match will automatically be forfeited with a score of 15-0 and 3-0 set points in favor of the team with the complete set of players.
If player # 4 is not available, player # 3 can be the substitute in player # 4’s remaining matches while the absent player is still allowed to play his next game even if he misses his earlier matches.

Men’s A
Amazing solid smashes and over the net drop shots were seen in Men’s A when Wataniya Telecom managed a 3-1 win over Hankook Tires when the brilliant tandem of Albert Marcelo and Allan Bondoc thumped Joshi Gaurav and Joshua Lagran 15-13, 15-7, Francis Enriquez and Sonny Cajipe worked well on the courts and wasted no time to beat Dave Laguio and Gerry Labagnoy 15-6, 15-13 and Albert paired with Francis fought wisely to edge Joshi and Dave in 3 extended sets 17-15, 12-15, 15-10.
Meanwhile, Joshua and Gerry saved the day for Hankook Tires when they hammered Allan and Sonny in 2 easy sets 15-11, 15-10.
In the same class, Worley Parsons and Western Union both collected 2 wins and 6 points each. Worley Parsons scored when Leeforp “Da Flash” Alonzo and Jong Rimando tamed Sherwin Felizardo and Mike Florendo 15-13, 15-12, while Jong and Tony Osea outlasted Mike Florendo and Rommel Carlos 15-10, 13-15, 15-8.
Western Union’s victory was driven by Sherwin and Emil Millanar who were made to sweat before they edged Leeforp and Edd Antonio in 3 extended sets 16-14, 11-15, 15-12 while one of the matches was won by default.
SK Engineering and Construction acquired a 3-1 victory against Wataniya Telecom through Joms Tantiangco and Jyotish PG who thumped Jaypee Parayno and Gerry Aguilar 15-13, 15-11, while Joenel Seva and Joms joined hands to outlast Masood and Jaypee 15-13, 8-15, 15-8 and Jeb “Eagle Eye” Elamparo and Jyotish outclassed Zahidul and Gerry 15-13, 18-19, 15-10.
Wataniya Telecom did not go home empty handed when the good pair of Masood and Zahidul crushed Joenel and Jeb in back to back sets 15-11, 15-11.
Later that day, Hankook Tires pulled off a 3-1 win over Worley Parsons driven by Joshi and Joshua who overcame Leeforp and Jong 15-12, 15-13, while Joshi and Dave outclassed Leeforp and Edd 11-15, 15-12, 15-7 and one of the games was won by default.
Worley Parsons scored through Jong and Tony who pressed on the accelerator in the last 2 sets to edge Joshua and Gerry 11-15, 15-10, 15-10.

Wataniya Telecom scored a 3-1 win over Western Union when Masood and Zahidul overpowered Sherwin and Mike 15-11, 15-13, Jaypee and Gerry outlasted Emil and Rommel 15-17, 15-10, 15-10 and Zahidul and Gerry edged Mike and Rommel 14-16, 16-14, 15-8 while Western Union took their victory by default.

Wataniya Telecom reigned in the Men’s B / Ladies A event when they won 3-1 against Western Union as Marlad Aman and Arnel Lara thumped Adrian Sinmeon and Roy Francisco 15-7, 15-12, Lawrence Viernes and Marlad fought for every point to edge Arnold Miclat and Adrian 7-15, 19-17, 15-10 and Jojie Corpuz and Arnel outclassed Arnie Manuel and Roy in a seesaw battle 15-9, 12-15, 15-8.
Western Union did not go home empty handed when Arnold and Arnie blended well on the courts to overcome Lawrence and Jojie 17-15, 15-9.
Meanwhile, Western Union managed 7-5 points against SK Engineering with the same number of 2 wins after Nikka Mae Roda and Tim Torres beat Janette Rimando and Aileen Perez 15-12, 15-11 while Nikka paired with Anthony Valdez thrashed Janette and Hans Ita-as 15-12, 15-4.
SK Engineering scored when Hans and Dianne “Baby Face” Elamparo overwhelmed Anthony Valdez and Tony Elamparo 15-11, 15-9 while beauties Aileen and Dianne fought their hearts out in the last 2 sets to edge Tim and Tony 11-15, 17-15, 15-9.
Wataniya Telecom scored more wins when they finished 3-1 against Hankook Tires as Roma Valdez and Romeo Bolos outclassed Cesar Isidro and Arcee Florendo 15-12, 10-15, 15-10, July Espiritu and Roma thumped Rio Ferrer and Cesar 15-8, 15-10 and Robert Gubat and Romeo outlasted Ryan Aguilar and Arcee 11-15, 15-5, 15-11.
Hankook Tires managed to acquire victory through Rio and Ryan as they edged July and Robert 4-15, 15-9, 15-9.
In the afternoon matches Wataniya Telecom leveled against Western Union with 2 wins and 6 points after Marlad and Arnel hammered Anthony and Tony 15-9, 15-8 and Jojie and Arnel wasted no effort to beat Tim and Tony 15-13, 15-4.

In Men’s C, Western Union accomplished 2 wins as did Worley Parsons but they generated 7-5 points after Dominador Gonzales and Keith Lawson overcame Lito Lorempo and Allen Miole 18-16, 15-8 while Benedict Garcia and Dominador blended well on the courts and thumped Roman Malabanan and Lito in 2 sets 15-9, 15-11.
Worley Parsons bounced back through Roman and Melissa Al-Bannay when they overwhelmed Benedict Garcia and Eric Farthing 15-13, 15-8 while Melissa with Allen Miole were made to sweat to edge Eric and Keith in 3 extended sets 15-17, 15-12, 16-14.

The tandem of Dodi and Merhan El-Din remained unbeaten to be on top of Beginners class after 3 matches as they gathered a maximum of 9 points when they completed all games in 2 easy sets. Dodi and Merhan blended well on the courts to trash Holden Ita-as and Kat Lazaro 15-3, 15-5, before they overpowered Marlon Villanueva and Emz Antonio 15-7, 15-8 and hardly broke sweat to beat Victor Toledo and Stella Cagampang 15-8, 15-7.
On the other hand, JR Briones and Bessy de Chavez harvested the same number of 3 wins but they managed only 6 points as their wins came in 3 sets.
