Amir launches campaign to protect marine ecology Volunteers team wins praise

KUWAIT CITY, June 2, (KUNA): His Highness the Amir Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah launched on Wednesday the national campaign for the protection of the marine environment, ‘Sinyar 4’, with the establishment of the ‘Kuwait Marine City’ reserve in Al-Zour area.
The launch took place at Bayan Palace in the presence of His Highness the Crown Prince Sheikh Nawaf Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah.
His Highness Sheikh Sabah received Chairperson of Kuwait Volunteer Work Society Sheikha Amthal Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah and the team of volunteers, and lauded their efforts for the protection of the marine environment and the example they were setting for their peers in this area.
He wished them success in the fulfillment of their aspirations, while underscoring the importance of protecting the marine environment and raising awareness in the society on this matter, while utilizing the capabilities of both youth and experts.
Sheikha Amthal and her team briefed His Highness the Amir on the goals of the reserve, and thanked him for his keenness and support. Sheikha Amthal hoped that efforts would come together for the protection of the marine environment.
On this occasion, a commemorative plaque was presented to His Highness the Amir.
In an unrelated development, Director General of Kuwait Foundation for the Advancement of Sciences (KFAS) Ali Al-Shamlan stressed that KFAS was keen since its establishment to support the scientific development of the country, and plays a remarkable role in spreading scientific awareness in the society.
He told KUNA that KFAS was keen in following the instructions of His Highness the Amir Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, the KFAS Chairman of the Board of Directors.
KFAS aims at offering financial support to programs and activities that focus on the creative skills of talented Kuwaitis, offering them prizes in various fields, he noted.
KFAS encourages Kuwaitis to patent their inventions at international bureaus of patents in the United States, Europe, and Gulf Cooperation Council GCC to protect their intellectual rights that introduce new scientific techniques to the world, he affirmed.
The rate of Kuwaiti patent requests filed with the United States reached a project every week, he said, adding that patent certificates in 2008-2009 reached 12 to 13 patents, he added.
Al-Shamlan said that Kuwaitis gained 48 medals, from which 18 are gold, 12 silver, and 12 bronze, and won six prizes, while a Kuwaiti won the Oscar gold cup at the International Exhibition of Inventions of Geneva.
KFAS is working to establish a scientific TV satellite channel to spread scientific and cultural awareness at the local and regional levels.
