MoI, MoC mull special server for BlackBerry
KUWAIT CITY, May 26: Officials from the Interior Ministry and its Communications counterpart agreed to install a special server for the BlackBerry service in Kuwait, after several users of BlackBerry Messenger have reportedly abused the service and violated societal norms and tradition, amid the spread rumors, says Al-Qabas daily. The daily quoted a source as stating that officials in charge of telephone monitoring, electronic crimes and criminal investigations attended the meeting, wherein they formally briefed the Communications Ministry about plans to communicate with the mother company at the United States in that regard.
According to the officials, this has become necessary since the cellular phone service providers are ready to offer services that fall within the jurisdiction of their work, and explained that providing a special server for this service in Kuwait will make it possible to control correspondence among individuals. The source indicated that communicating with the mother company over the issue is not to restrict freedom but a method to discourage defiance of law spread by dissemination of lies. “We will disconnect the service if the US-based company fails to respond,” the source submitted.
Meanwhile, it is impossible to control services available on the BlackBerry, particularly the BlackBerry Messenger (BBM), reports Al-Jareeda daily. The daily quoting Head of the Customer Service Unit of Britain’s BlackBerry Company Natasha Melis stressed that supervision of the conversation program on the device is impossible, indicating the company does not record personal dialogue. Meanwhile, official spokesperson of the government, the Minister of Communications and State Minister for National Assembly Affairs, Dr Mohammed Al-Busairi, agreed during a meeting of the Ministries of Communication and Interior on need to handle the issue in the legal perspective.
