EPA eyes report on oil pits ‘Find solution to negative impact’

KUWAIT CITY, May 11 (KUNA): Environment Public Authority (EPA) called Tuesday on the Kuwait Gulf Oil Company (KGOC) to submit a full report on the environmental hazards of oil pits in Wafra area which were the a result of oil drilling.
Director General of EPA Salah Al-Medhi told KUNA after meeting with KGOC officials that the company should find a solution to the negative impact of such pits in Wafra area, noting that such KGOC drilling methods were in violation of the EPA 210/2001 resolution.
The EPA will be sending teams to the area within two weeks to cheek the pits.
KGOC officials on their part emphasized during their meeting the efforts which have been exerted to seal these oil pits which were hazardous to the environment, noting that hopefully the efforts would remedy the situation by 2012.
Meanwhile, a recent local field survey shows that local manufacturers and contractors have accepted 90 percent of recommendations enshrined in a mechanism released by Kuwait Petroleum Corporation (KPC) in February 2002 for shoring up national industry, a senior oil official said Monday.
Addressing the 9th conference on the private sector’s role in development and infrastructure projects set up under the build, operate and transfer (BOT) system, Deputy Chairman of the Kuwait National Petroleum Company (KNPC) Asaad Al-Saad cited the survey as recommending that the mechanism be put in place.

Through this study, 70 proposals have been made by local contractors and manufacturers, showing that recommendations bearing on the mechanism are not enough for an optimal relationship between the KNPC and national companies and plants, he said.
On a partnership program to spur the private sector to join oil activities, Al-Saad said out of the KPC’s belief in the significance of bolstering the private sector and ensuring all factors of success in order to put the national oil industry mechanism in effect, the KNPC made up a committee for supporting the private sector on July 22, 2004.
The KPC’s mechanism consists of 28 recommendations pertinent to shoring up national companies and plants, including the preparation of specifications and implementation of contracts, he added.
They are also bearing on periodical consultations with national companies and factories on how to reinforce cooperation with world oil companies, Al-Saad noted.
