‘Need to boost GCC security cooperation to face threats’ Lieut Gen Al-Rujaib addresses Riyadh meet

RIYADH, April 25, (KUNA): Kuwait on Sunday urged the other member states of the six-seat Gulf Cooperation Council to seek greater cooperation in the face of dangers threatening stability of the GCC countries. Dangers surrounding the national security of the council states threaten their stability and warrant greater effective cooperation and relentless efforts, said the Interior Undersecretary Lieutenant General Ahmad Al-Rujaib, addressing the second meeting of the current session of the GCC undersecretaries that got underway here today. Lieut Gen Al-Rujaib, the chairman of the current session, urged the conferees to draft “realistic recommendations that can be translated into action once they have been adopted by the ministers of interior at their upcoming meeting for the benefit of the security of our peoples and stability of the region.” The ranking Kuwaiti security official signaled out the recent attacks by terrorist groups against the borders of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, noting that these gunmen sought to destabilize the security of the kingdom.


He was alluding to Yemeni Huthi rebels who infiltrated across the borders and attempted to engage the Saudi regular forces during the recent clashes with the Yemeni government forces.
Lieut Gen Al-Rujaib praised the Saudi armed forces that bravely repulsed the aggression and prayed for souls of the martyrs.
He expressed gratitude to the Second Deputy Prime Minister and Interior Minister Prince Naif Bin Abdul Aziz and ranking officials for the warm hospitality and orderly preparations for the meeting.
The conferees discussed various security issues of joint concern, means of promoting security cooperation and coordination and some strategic affairs. They will refer their recommendations to the ministers, due to meet in Riyadh late next week.
The GCC, founded in the 80s, comprises Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Bahrain, Oman and Qatar. The body was established to secure greater cooperation among the regional states in the security domain as well as various other sectors. It was set up in the shadow of high regional tension resulting from the war between Iran and Iraq.
