‘Adopt rules to combat corruption’ Govt slammed for failure to set up public authority
KUWAIT CITY, April 16: The legislative and executive authorities must adopt regulations on combating corruption, which were drafted by Kuwait Transparency Society (KTS) long ago, reports Al-Rai daily quoting KTS Board Chairman Dr Salah Al-Ghazali.
In a forum conducted by the society recently, Al-Ghazali disclosed the society has merged four draft bills into one, under the title “Public Authority for Honesty”, in addition to five changes made to the new bill. He explained this came after a series of meetings with the National Assembly’s Legislative Affairs Committee and its chairman Hussein Al-Huraiti.
Criticizing the government for its failure to establish a public authority for combating corruption, Al-Ghazali lamented the government has not presented any recommendation to curb corruption since it signed an anti-corruption agreement with the United Nations (UN) seven years ago.
Al-Ghazali revealed he had earlier met MPs Waleed Al-Tabtabaei and Dr Maasouma Al-Mubarak separately to discuss the proposal of the society. He added 20 lawmakers hinted on adopting the four draft bills of the society before they were merged into one.
On the other hand, KTS board member Dr Faisal Al-Fahd clarified the UN has specified a mechanism to ensure implementation of the anti-corruption agreement. He said Kuwait, as a signatory of the agreement, is obliged to carry out its stipulations; otherwise, it will be held responsible by the international community.
