A number of lawmakers threaten to grill the PM, other ministers Govt accused of bargaining with some MPs to obtain their votes

KUWAIT CITY, March 30:  Several lawmakers have made fresh threats to grill HH the Prime Minister Sheikh Nasser Mohammad Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah, First Deputy Premier and Minister of Defense Sheikh Jaber Mubarak Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah, and Minister of Social Affairs and Labor Dr Mohammad Al-Afasi over a number of issues.
This came in a parliamentary session, which was slated for deliberations on the Expert Law, under the chairmanship of Deputy Speaker Abdullah Al-Roumi Tuesday.
MP Hussein Al-Qallaf threatened to grill Al-Afasi for failure to respond to his queries on referring Kuwait Handicapped Society Chairman Ayed al-Shammari for interrogation as the latter has been accused of defamation.  The chairman had previously claimed that he has a video recording of the alleged rape of a female handicapped student at an undisclosed school.

Denouncing the response of Al-Afasi, Al-Qallaf wondered why the minister has been insisting that he has not received any complaint from the family of the alleged rape victim, while Al-Shammari claims to have a video recording of the incident.  He also raised doubt on the minister’s argument that the society is not officially registered.
Meanwhile, MP Ahmad Al-Saadoun outrightly rejected the annual plan of the government, indicating it is a disaster considering the serious allegations on the French Rafale aircraft deal.  He intends to present amendments and if the government rejects his proposal, he has no option but to submit political questions in this regard.
Responding to Al-Saadoun’s comment on the development plan of the government, Minister of Communications and State Minister for National Assembly Affairs Dr Mohammad Al-Busairi explained the annual plan has been included in the agenda of the Economic and Financial Affairs Committee and the executive authority is now ready to accept remarks about the plan.

Al- Saadoun pointed out the annual plan forwarded to the Economic and Financial Affairs Committee is empty as the Ministry of Defense was mentioned only in five lines of the plan despite a number of discussions on the French Rafale aircraft deal.  He said he has obtained information that the intermediary in this deal is Bashar, a non-Kuwaiti.  He called on the premier and Sheikh Mubarak to accept his recommendations; otherwise, “we will be forced to use our constitutional tools to submit political questions regarding the deal.”
In a related development, MPs Faisal Al-Muslim and Dr Jamaan Al-Harbash threatened to grill the prime minister and Sheikh Mubarak due to a dearth of information about the French Rafale aircraft deal.  They warned against signing the deal as they intend to present a grilling request a day after the signing.
Al-Muslim added he has obtained information about the entry of some Israelis to Kuwait, so he will also present parliamentary questions on the issue.

In another development, some lawmakers, including Al-Muslim and Musallam Al-Barrak have accused the government of making compromises with certain lawmakers to obtain their support for Information and Oil Minister Sheikh Ahmad Abdullah Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah during the no-confidence vote last week.
MP Khalid Al-Sultan vehemently denied the accusations of Al-Barrak, asking his colleague to reveal the identities of lawmakers involved in the alleged compromise and present evidence.
Echoing the sentiments of Al-Sultan, MP Adnan AbdulSamad asked Al-Barrak to prove his allegations.  He stressed it is not true that those who voted against the no-confidence motion had bargained with the government.
Disclosing names of MPs involved in the alleged bargain, Al-Barrak said the premier had an agreement with MP Dr Hassan Jowhar not to renew the tenure of the directors of Kuwait University (KU) and Public Authority for Applied Education and Training (PAAET) in exchange for his vote against the motion.  He added the government agreed with MP Dr Aseel Al-Awadhi to refer the Co-education Law to the Constitutional Court as all the Cabinet members will vote on it and cancel the Segregation Law.
Both Jowhar and Al-Awadhi have refuted Al-Barrak’s claim on their bargain with the government.  Al-Awadhi explained she has been working on the Co-education Law since four months ago - prior to the grilling of Sheikh Abdullah - because she believes the Segregation Law is unconstitutional.
