MP slams govt in nationality debate Interior minister queried

KUWAIT CITY, March 28: MP Khalid Al-Adwah has criticized the government for demanding the cancellation of the Kuwaiti citizenship of those who hold dual nationality, except those who obtained their second citizenship from the US or Britain.
Al-Adwah asked State Minister for Cabinet Affairs Roudhan Al-Roudhan to submit a copy of a decision issued by the Fatwa and Legislation Department in 1988, allowing Kuwaitis to hold dual nationality if they obtained the second from countries, which grant citizenship automatically to those born in their territories and do not allow the cancellation of this nationality.
Meanwhile, MP Mubarak Al-Waalan has forwarded questions to Interior Minister Sheikh Jaber Al-Khalid on the naturalization process and his ministry’s refusal to register the children of Kuwaiti men married to Bedouns.

Al-Waalan asked if the ministry’s decision not to register the children of Kuwaiti men married to Bedouns is legal. He also inquired about the legal status of these children as per the authorities under the ministry.
Commenting on the nationality issue, Al-Waalan demanded a detailed report on the alleged amendment of the nationality certificates of some citizens - from Kuwaitis through naturalization to Kuwaitis by origin. He sought clarifications on the factors that led to the amendment, date, procedures, committees involved in the decision, names of committee members and their curriculum vitae, and minutes of panel meetings in this regard. He urged the minister to submit a complete list of naturalized Kuwaitis whose citizenship certificates were amended from Jan 1, 1992 to March 25, 2010.
Al-Waalan has also asked the Ministry of Health (MoH) to clarify its stand on the children of Kuwaiti men married to Bedouns. He wants to know if these children are registered in the ministry and if there is a plan to issue birth certificates to this segment.
