Man appeals acquittals in Bohra sect row

KUWAIT CITY, March 20: The Court of Appeals set April 15, 2010 to look into an appeal filed by a man against 13 Kuwaiti writers and editors-in-chief who have been acquitted by a lower court. The man had filed lawsuits against the men accusing them of publishing derogatory articles against his sect in local newspapers.
In his memo, the lawyer for the plaintiff said former MP Khudair Al-Enezi, MP Mohamed Hayef Al-Mutairi, Bassam Al-Shatti, Ahmad Al-Kous, Ahmad Rashid Al-Fahad, Yousef Al-Fayhan, Esam Al-Felaij, Marzouq Al-Mutairi, MP Khaled Al-Sultan, Waleed Bu Rabbaa, Abdullah Al-Hadlaq, Mohamed Al-Awadhi, Khalifa Al-Sabah and Jassem Budai, had insulted his client by claiming his sect was infidel.
He added what they said was published in two local papers — the Al-Watan Arabic daily and Al-Rai daily. So, he sued the editors-in-chief of the two dailies.
This came when the plaintiff submitted a letter to the Kuwait Municipality to allocate a piece of land for the ‘Bohra’ sect to perform their religious rites.
When the writers heard about the issue, each of them commented on it describing the people of this sect as infidel.
The session was presided over by Judge Ibrahim Al-Obaid.
