3 Asians killed in Jleeb fire 5 firefighters injured
KUWAIT CITY, March 20: Three Asians were charred to death in a massive fire that engulfed a basement of a building used for storing sanitary ware and perfumes in Jleeb Al-Shuyoukh, opposite Al-Nassr Club, in the wee hours of Saturday. The fire broke out at 1:00 am and wrecked the entire 1,000 square meter area.
Firefighters from eight fire centers had to battle the fire for two hours to bring it under control. They also rescued three Asians who were trapped in the building.
Five firefighters sustained injuries and four others were asphyxiated in the operation, say sources, adding the injured had to be referred to Farwaniya Hospital for treatment.
Meanwhile, the remains of the three victims have been referred to forensics and investigations are going on to find the cause of the fire.
Director of Public Relations at the Kuwait Fire Services Department (KFSD) Major Khaleel Al-Ameer has called on residents to stick to guidelines related to storing, in order to ensure the safety of everyone.
Furthermore, Assistant Director of Farwaniya Security Commission asked reporters covering the event to leave the premises. He allegedly insulted and got some reporters expelled from the location, besides snatching their mobile phones and asking for their identity cards. Stressing that reporters were just trying to do their job, Al-Seyassah daily appealed to Undersecretary at the Interior Ministry Major Ahmad Al-Rujaib to open an investigation into the matter and take action against the Assistant Director who insulted reporters of Al-Seyassah and Al-Jarida dailies.
