Committee tackles women’s int’l sports events participation row ‘MPs present bill on handling conflict in court to Assembly’

KUWAIT CITY, March 18: The Committee for Studying Negative Phenomenon in the Parliament discussed Thursday the controversies surrounding the participation of Kuwaiti women in international and regional sports competitions with the Public Authority for Youth and Sports (PAYS) officials.
Head of the committee lawmaker Mohamed Hayef said the panel requested investigations to distinguish those behind the participation of Kuwaiti women in sports events abroad as this is against the Islamic Sharia.  He urged Kuwaiti women who intend to participate in future championships to abide by the Islamic customs and traditions.
Hayef explained the panel discussed with the PAYS officials the possibility of allocating some of its KD 70 million budget to instill patriotism in the hearts and minds of the youth.  He also criticized the allocation of KD 60,000 for encouraging the youth to engage in sports and providing the required facilities.  “This is a small amount for such a noble purpose.  We should allot more money for this cause, particularly in areas where there is a high population of unemployed or stateless youths,” he added.

KUWAIT CITY: Attorney Fahd Al-Hebbeni said the parliamentarians have presented a bill on handling conflicts in court to the National Assembly — not the Lawyers Society - pointing out that the European and other Arab countries have approved this bill to maintain transparency for all disputing parties, including the judges, reports Annahar daily.
Affirming no other authority than the society represents lawyers in the country, Al-Hebbeni considers the proposed amendments to the Audio-Visual Law a drawback in Kuwait’s efforts to protect freedoms.  He also stressed the need to establish an institution represented by prosecutors with the related fields of specialization to handle media cases, especially those forwarded by the Ministry of Information to the prosecution.
In the meantime, Alam Al-Yawm has quoted reliable sources as saying that the Higher Judiciary Council is preparing a response to a query forwarded by MP Saadoun Hammad Al-Otaibi to Deputy Premier for Legal Affairs and Minister of Justice, Awqaf and Islamic Affairs Rashed Al-Hammad on his failure to appoint a deputy chairman for the Cassation Court until now.
Stating that submission of the query is tantamount to interfering in the internal affairs of the judicial authority, sources revealed the response will include criticism on Al-Otaibi’s improper use of his legislative and constitutional powers.
