Kuwait hurt by tribalism, extremism, says Awadhi Mistakes seen in naturalization process
KUWAIT CITY, March 13: “Extremism, tribalism and unlimited freedom are the ills currently ailing Kuwait and the country is paying the price of clashes and ideological differences seen inside the National Assembly,” Al-Rai daily quoted former minister of Health and Planning Dr Abdulrahman Al-Awadhi as saying.
Al-Awadhi, who is serving as executive secretary of a regional marine environment protecting organization, made the comments while speaking to a Saudi newspaper Okaz. “The current Kuwaiti society did not draft the Constitution as it was drafted in 1965 and those who came after 1965 are not real Kuwaitis because huge mistakes have been committed in the naturalization process,” he said, adding “Kuwaitis, however, can recognize very well who is a real Kuwaiti and who isn’t.”
Al-Awadhi said the country spends on each individual who stays in Kuwait about KD 3,000 per year for electricity, education, roads and other amenities. Yet it has been proved that the country does not believe in planning either at the executive level or at the legislative level, he said and called for amending the Constitution, in order to control the behavior of MPs who have converted the assembly into a “House of Lords.” He suggested that half the MPs be elected while the rest be appointed by HH the Amir.
Referring to the Health Ministry, Al-Awadhi said, “I feel sorry for its deteriorating condition. I provided a plan in this respect in 2000, but it was never implemented as each minister comes with his team.”
