Police arrest Syrian brothers: Sec-uritymen arrested two Syrian brothers who are believed to be members of an organized gang which specializes in smuggling subsidized kerosene out of the country and sells it in the black market in an unidentified GCC country. The gang is reportedly making millions of dinars in this trade.
The case came to light when a man, who claimed to be an insider, called the Al-Seyassah daily and gave details of the smuggling operation. The informant said he just wanted the Interior Ministry to know about the theft through the media. The informant said two Syrian brothers, in connivance with a petrol pump employee, fill kerosene in a water tanker daily and transfer the contents into a container in Amghara scrapyard area, from where it is sent to a GCC country as ‘oil waste.’ The informant asked Al-Seyassah reporter to go to the petrol pump at a certain time and see the operation with his own eyes. The reporter went and noted that the filling operation took two hours. While the tanker was on its way to Amghara, securitymen, who were tipped-off by Al-Seyassah, intercepted the vehicle on Jahra Motorway and arrested one Syrian brother who was driving it. The Syrian said his job was to transfer kerosene into a container and that he did not know the people he worked for.
Securitymen are investigating the case.
