Al-Sadoon wins Precision to spoil Al-Ansari’s clean sweep
KUWAIT CITY, March 10: Mohammed Al-Sadoon spoiled a perfect sweep by Emad Al-Ansari as both of them along with Lang Lang Basmayor, Diana Leonor and Vilma Pala-Og walked home with the top prizes in various categories as the Hala February Open Shootfest Competition ended Tuesday evening at the Mayadeen Shooting Range in Sabhan with the prize-distribution ceremony without a shot being fired on the last day of the event as all the firing had been completed last week.
The only thing which was left for this week was the decision of the organisers on the winners as some of the top placers had been tied after the last round and a count back was required to determine who would be the ultimate champions.
The event was organised by a team of Filipino Action Shooting Team (FAST) officers headed by the president of the organisation Manny Cornelio and vice-president Chito Lamigo.
The event, which was supported by Gen Ahmed Al Saleem and sponsored by Vangie Gernale and Marimel Labastida of Western Union Money Transfer, took place over five weeks with the shooting competition comprising of 3 individual competitions: Practical, Precision and Rifle.
The competition in all the categories was very strongly contested with several near perfect scores being achieved. A total of 61 competitors participated in the 3 categories, shooting 170 times over 5 weeks.
Competition rules state that where there is a draw for first, second, third or fourth place, the prize will be awarded to the competitor scoring the highest number of 10s on the target.
Manny Cornelio opened up proceedings at the awarding ceremony by welcoming the officers and members of the FAST and all the shooters in the competition. He thanked all of them for their dedication to the event and also praised all those who had helped make it a success.
Before the prizes were awarded there was an induction ceremony in which all the new FAST office-bearers were sworn in.
The prize distribution ceremony which followed saw a lot of happy faces, especially when all the winners who had toiled hard over the last five weeks collected their trophies.
While there was no shooting this week it is important to look back at the Shooting Festival and recount the proceedings as not all the positions had been decided and a decision had been awaited from the organisers on all the ties in the various categories.
Practical
The practical shooting competition involved the use of a Baretta 9 mm pistol with the competitors required to move through a tough course — under the watchful eye of Range Officer Elmer Pelorin and his team — and engage 10 targets with a maximum of 2 shots per target. The scenario also required the competitors to change magazine during the course.
The competition was based on speed and accuracy with the competitors liable to incur penalties and procedural errors for shooting “no shoot” targets, missing a target and minor safety infringements. Major safety violations resulted in disqualification.
Practical shooting requires the competitor to be competent in handling the pistol and therefore, for safety reasons only proficient shooters were permitted to participate in the competition.
A total of 27 male and 2 female competitors participated in the event shooting a total of 49 times.
During the 5 weeks of the contest there was fierce competition for first place. Eman Al-Ansari was placed first scoring a point average of 4.083 with Lambert Bernardo very close on his trail with 4.012 which he shot in the last week of the event.
In third place was Fahad Yousef who got a 3.573 point average after shooting 3 times on the final night and in fourth place was Mubarak Al-Sabah with an average of 2.886.

Precision
The precision competition involved the use of a 9 mm Baretta pistol at a target placed at 10 m, 15 m, 20 m and 25 m. At 10 m and 15 m the target was exposed for 2 seconds with the shooter having to engage it with one round repeated 5 times at each distance. At 20 m and 25 m the target was exposed for 5 seconds: the shooter had to engage the target with one round repeated 5 times at each distance. The maximum possible score was 200.
The precision competition required the competitor to demonstrate great accuracy whilst shooting at varying distances under the pressure of challenging time constraints. The target measured 50 cm x 50 cm with the centre area of the target where each hit scores 10 measuring 4.5 cm in diameter with concentric scoring rings 2.4 cm apart scoring between 9 and 1 point for each hit. At 25 m the 10 is difficult for most people to see let alone hit with a pistol bullet.
In the men’s precision competition 29 competitors participated shooting 47 times.
By the end of the competition there was a tie for first place between Emad Al-Ansari and Mohammed Al-Sadoon as they finished with identical scores of 159.
Close scrutiny of the targets showed that Mohammed Al-Sadoon had hit the 10 five times and Emad Al-Ansari four times. This gave the first prize to Mohammed Al-Sadoon with second place being awarded to Emad Al-Ansari. Nawaf Al-Tabikh was in third place with 149 and in fourth place was Faruk Mujawar with 135.

Rifle
The rifle shooting competition required competitors to use a 0.22 Hornet rifle at a target from 50 m. The competitor was in the seated position and had 5 minutes to engage the target with 10 shots. The 0.22 Hornet rifle is a bolt action rifle equipped with telescopic sights. That said, the target only measured 25 cm x 25 cm with the centre “10” circle measuring 1 cm in diameter. The other scoring circles are 0.8 cm apart and score from 9 to 1 for each hit. The rifle competition required the competitors to demonstrate absolute accuracy and concentration as the slightest movement, even from breathing, can result in missing the target. The maximum score possible is 100.
Once again, the competition for first place in the men’s and ladies competition was fiercely contested. There were 28 male competitors shooting a total of 51 times.
Emad Al-Ansari achieved a near perfect score of 96 and was awarded first prize. Closely behind in second place was Jeffrey Sweet with a score of 94 with Chris Veitch in third place with 90. Fourth place was tied between Aldrin Dalida and Cesar Isidro with 89 points but as Aldrin Dalida scored more 10s, he was awarded fourth prize.
