Hankook capture FBAA one-day tourney title Patriarca, Albay clinch Beginners crown
KUWAIT CITY, March 8: Hankook Tires ruled the courts last Friday when Filipino Badminton Association in Ahmadi (FBAA) Conference held the Hankook Tires One-Day League tournament at the Fahaheel Sports Center in Fahaheel, Friday.
Although there was very limited time available at the venue to accommodate all the players FBAA Ronald Margate maximized both the space and time at his disposal to come up with another successful competition. As always FBAA tournaments are very well organized and this one was no exception as everything ran like a well-oiled machine.
The tournament opened with the knock-out elimination round with 6 competing teams, composed of Worley Parsons, Almailem, Equipment Company, SK Engineering and Construction, Western Union Money Transfer and Hankook Tires based on 10 players each and divided over 5 categories — Men’s A, Men’s B and Ladies Higher A, Men’s C, Ladies A and Ladies B.
The Technical Committee had earlier decided that the initial games mode of play would be 15 points to win with the game being extended by 2 points in case of a tie while the 21 running points rule would be applied to both the semifinal and final matches.

Hankook Tires vs Equipment Company
Hankook Tires proved that they were the stars of this one tourney when the put in an outstanding performance in the championship finals that resulted in them clinching the crown with a landslide 5-0 victory over Equipment Company .
Men’s A Leaders Joenel Seva and Jong Rimando produced bamboozling smashes and over the net drop shots that caught Sherwin Felizardo and Allan Bondoc unawares and the latter were easily defeated 21-18, 16-21, 21-14, while the Men’s B and Ladies Higher A class tandem of Ryan Aguilar and Rommel Carlos worked hand in hand on the courts to edge Janette Rimando and Chris Hernadez 21-18, 10-21, 21-16.
Meanwhile, the Men’s C class of Hans Ita-as and Jyotish wasted no effort to tame Dino Mendoza and Francis Salazar 21-17, 21-8, the Ladies higher A pair of Roma Valdez and Jessica Magallanes overcame Dianne Lapason and Cathy Lesaca 21-20, 21-15 and the girl power from the Ladies B category Arlene San Mateo and Glorence Montesclaros thumped Sanse Mendoza and Thess Herrera 21-17, 21-14.

Equipment Company vs Al Mailem
In the semi-finals Equipment Company pulled off a landslide victory against Almailem 5-0 after the good pair of Sherwin Felizardo and Allan Bondoc sweat for every point before they could edge Gaurav Joshi and Norman Abad in a close seesaw match 21-19, 20-21, 21-19, while Janette Rimando and Chris Hernandez overwhelmed Maricel Romano and July Espiritu 21-16, 21-20, Dino Mendoza and Francis Salazar wasted no time to beat Roman Malabanan and Majed Abdul Aziz 21-11, 21-14, the girl power of beauties Dianne Lapason and Cathy Lesaca hammered Lanie Gaborno and Beng Pastor 21-13, 21-10 and Sanse Mendoza and Thess Herrera outclassed Ness Aguilar and Gay Caedo 21-20, 13-21, 21-16.
Hankook Tires vs Al Bahar
Hankook Tires almost completed a landslide victory over Al Bahar when they beat them by 4-1 points as Joenel Seva and Jong Rimando thumped Jon-Jon “Idol” Torres and Dave Laguio 21-12, 21-13, Ryan Aguilar and Rommel Carlos overcame Robert Gubat and Nelson Pamfilo in back to back sets 21-19, 21-19, Hans Ita-as and Jyotish wasted no sweat to thrash Romeo Bolos and Amy Ignacio 21-17, 21-9 and the tandem of Roma Valdez and Jessica Magallanes crushed Arcee Piscasio and Sang Piscasio in 2 easy sets 21-12, 21-8.
Meanwhile, the Al Bahar team was saved by the game of Grace de Leon and Belinda Valdez when they brushed aside Arlene San Mateo and Glorence Montesclaros 21-17, 21-15.
Elimination Round
Almailem vs Worley Parsons
In the earlier matches, Almailem edged Worley Parsons 3-2 points after Gaurav Joshi and Norman Abad outlasted Leeforp “Da Flash” Alonzo and FBAA President Ronald Margate in a seesaw battle 15-12, 12-15,15-13, Lanie Gaborno and Beng Pastor hammered Rochelle Baldomero and Jell Espinosa 15-10, 15-9 and Ness Aguilar and Gay Caedo brushed aside Ana Trias and Angeline Rodriguez 15-10, 15-11.
On the other hand, Worley Parsons were victorious when Rio Ferrer and Lala Tan tamed Maricel Romano and July Espiritu 15-11, 15-9 while Allen Miole and Vince Vidal blended well on the courts and overwhelmed Roman Malabanan and Majed Abdul Aziz 15-13, 15-12.
Equipment Company vs SK Engineering & Construction
Equipment Company pulled off a landslide victory against SK Engineering and Construction 5-0 as Sherwin Felizardo and Allan Bondoc outlasted “Elamparo Bros” Bon and Jeb in 3 extended sets 15-12, 14-16, 15-13, Janette Rimando and Chris Hernandez beat Tony Elamparo and Jean Blouin in 2 sets 15-11, 15-13, Dino Mendoza and Francis Salazar outclassed Anthony Valdez and Angie Rodriguez 11-15, 15-12, 15-8, Dianne Lapason and Cathy Lesaca wasted no effort to tame Anne Diaz and Lhen Vidal 15-10, 15-9 and Sanse Mendoza and Tess Herrera outlasted Dhonna Salazar and Maricel Culangan 15-9, 11-15, 15-7.
Hankook Tires vs Western Union
Hankook Tires almost seized a landslide victory over Western Union Money Transfer as they won 4-1 but Joenel Seva and Jong Rimando were made to sweat to outlast William Naoe and Tony Osea 15-10, 12-15, 15-13, Hans Ita-as and Jyotish appeared to be in a hurry as they hammered Franklin Montesclaros and Carlo Trias 15-8, 15-10, Roma Valdez and Jessica Magallanes overpowered Aleli Knight and Lea Macaraeg 15-9, 15-11 and Arlene San Mateo and Glorence Montesclaros outclassed Abi Sedik and Marinette “Tanette” Tuliao in a seesaw battle 15-12, 12-15, 15-11.
Western Union Money Transfer on the other hand did not go home empty handed when a face-saving game saw Gerry Aguilar and Aileen Perez edge Ryan Aguilar and Rommel Carlos 15-11, 11-15, 15-12.
Beginners
Earlier in the beginners class, 8 pairs battled for the crown with Annie Centeno and Shirley Iglesias brushing aside Holden Ita-as and Jonathan Vidal 15-11, 15-10, Eric Farthing and Claudette Farthing blending well on the courts to overpower Norie Parado and Ell Parado 15-11, 15-8, mother and daughter Elamparo- -Ellen and Ibe were at their best to edge Romeo and Cody Abad 14-16, 15-12, 15-9 and Che-Che Patriarca and Raymond Albay combined their wits and efforts in the last 2 sets to outlast Bill and Merhan 16-18, 15-7, 15-4.
In the semi-finals mother and daughter Elamparo extended their performance to a higher level and brushed aside Annie Centeno and Shirley Iglesias 21-18, 21-17 while Che-Che Patriarca and Raymond Albay were made to sweat to outclass Eric Farthing and Claudette Farthing in 3 sets 8-21, 21-13, 21-19.
Che-Che Patriarca and Raymond Albay proved that they are the best in the class when they scored victory in the championship finals against mother and daughter Elamparo after they shifted into a higher gear in the last 2 sets to win 16-21, 21-15, 21-10.
