Rising Stars lift KIFF Veterans Trophy YRC beat KGA 4-2 in shootout
KUWAIT CITY, March 8: YRC Rising Stars beat Kuwait Goan Association(KGA) 4-2 in the tie- breaker after a 2-2 draw in the final of the KIFF veterans 7 a-side one day soccer tournament organized by Kuwait Indian Football Federation at MOH grounds, Shuwaikh recently.
The tournament is annually held by Kuwait Indian Football Federation (KIFF) to give an opportunity for unregistered veteran players of age 35 years and above of affiliated members/clubs. This year’s edition attracted 11 teams divided into 2 groups.
It was YRC Rising Stars and KGA who proved their supremacy by reaching the finals. The tournament was witnessed by a large holiday enthusiastic spectators and football fans.
The chief guest at the event was Fidelis Fernandes with, guests of honor being Luis Cardozo and Lorry Pinto, besides special invitees and presidents of all affiliated member clubs. Before the start of the finals, chief guest, guests of honor, special invitees and all the club presidents were introduced to players and referees by KIFF sports secretary Bernardo Fernandes. This was followed by the national anthems of Kuwait and India.
The Chief Guest Fidelis Fernandes in his speech highlighted the importance of this day (Liberation day of Kuwait) for the expatriates in Kuwait, and Goans in particular. Guest of honor Luis Cardozo also spoke on this occasion. Tony Correia, KIFF vice president proposed a vote of thanks. The tournament was sponsored by Lorry Pinto, Albano Pinto, Fidelis Fernandes, Victor Mesquita, V K Vohra, Goa caterers and Luis Cardozo.
Winner’s trophy was handed over to YRC Rising stars besides individual trophies to all their players. Oldest player of the tournament trophy was awarded to Tony Gonsalves of United Goan Strikers, who at the age of 68 years was at his best beating all the other contestants of the tournament to win this award. Kazi of YRC rising stars was adjudged as the man of the match in the finals.
All the tournament matches were officiated by KIFF referees. The entire day’s proceedings were compeered by Clevy. DJ Mario provided the sound system and PA Tony was the official photographer.
Meanwhile, Navelim Youth Centre conducted the draw of their Raffles during the break. The list of winners can be obtained from members of the club.
