Iran … enough enemies

WE witnessed uproar against the Kuwaiti Ambassador to Iran Majdi Al-Thufairi - one of the best diplomats - last week when he talked about the proposed naming of the Gulf water as Persian Gulf, instead of Arabian Gulf.  He said the idea emerged at a time when the spirit of patriotism was spreading in the region and during the confrontation between former Egyptian leader Jamal Abdul Nasser and the Shah in Iran.
We believe the name of the territorial water does not matter as it is shared equally by the Arabs and Persians.  The Arabs, including Iraq and Arabian Gulf countries, are on the northern part of the territorial water, while Iran is on the West.  This territorial water divides the Arabs and Persians, so I think it should be named ‘Gulf’, as the Western people call it.
Iran strongly calls for the naming of this territorial water as Persian Gulf.  Last week, a Greek airhost at the Iranian Kish Company lost his job when the Iranian passengers protested after seeing the Arabian Gulf on the flight plan showed on the screens of the aircraft.  The airhost then asked the passengers to calm down, but instead of rewarding him, the Iranian authorities at the airport cancelled his immigration permit!
Later, the Iranian transportation minister issued a statement, advising the foreign airline companies from Arab countries to refrain from using the name ‘Arabian Gulf’.  We were surprised by the move of the Iranian authorities against the neighboring states because they have disregarded the fact that we all share the same air, water and religion.
The neighborhood is more valuable than naming the territorial water, especially at a time when Iran is at loggerheads with the Western powers and a majority of the countries are against it.  Iran has no reason to isolate itself and spread enmity because it stands to lose nothing by giving the territorial water another name.

Iran … enough enemiesEsther Haman | 2/26/2010 1:11:32 AM What was the point of you article? It is not just a historical fact that this body of water has always been called the "Persian Gulf", but Iran has the longest border on this starch of the water as well. The word "Iran" meaning the family of several group of people live in Iran and have Persian heritage. No enemy included.
Magnanimity is a barometer of peaceful intentionsDan Huck | 2/25/2010 5:23:01 PM When a nation feels itself under a lot of pressure; that it's neighbors are deserting it, that it is under suspicion for planning inappropriate and harmful things, there is a tendency for a nation to "hunker down", and act unintelligently. When France actively tried to discourage the US from invading Iraq, the war party went so far as to rename French Fries. Traditionally, in the US, at least in New England, there is a way of naming streets which connect towns in a manner which informs you where the street takes you. For example, in Salem, MA the road which goes to Lowell, MA is called Lowell St., and the same road in Lowell is called Salem St. I hope we get to a time when the Americans and Europeans call it the Gulf, the Iranians call it the Arabian Gulf and the Arabs call it the Persian Gulf.
