No proof, no witnesses: lawyers March 31 to decide fate of woman in Jahra tent blaze

KUWAIT CITY, Feb 23: The Criminal Court Tuesday after listening to the argument of lawyers defending Nasra Al-Enezi set March 31, 2010 to issue a verdict in the case. Nasra has been charged with setting fire to a wedding tent in Oyoun which has resulted in the death and injury to scores of people.
During the session defense attorneys Zaid Al-Khabbaz and Saqqaf Al-Saqqaf, requested the court to acquit their client because they said there is no evidence to prove she set the tent ablaze.
The lawyers also said there were no eyewitnesses who saw her setting the tent on fire. Moreover, they said police found no fingerprints on the bottle which allegedly contained fuel which the woman used to light the tent.
The lawyers said the suspect had admitted to the charges under duress because police had arrested her brothers and kept them in detention to force her to admit to the charges.
The defense lawyers also told the court the witnesses had all testified that they did not get the smell of benzene in the area on the day of the incident before or after the fire. This can prove that the fire was not caused either by benzene or their client but some other factor, they added.
Earlier the suspect had told the investigators and the Public Prosecution that she became crazy when she learned that her husband was going to marry another woman.
She added she threatened him not to marry but he did not listen to her pleas and went ahead with the wedding procedures.
On the day of the wedding, she said she took a taxi from her family home in Rabiya, bought petrol from one of the petrol stations, went to the tent and set it on fire and returned home in the same taxi.
Until now the fire has resulted in the death of 57 women. Moreover, a lot of women have suffered first degree burns and are in a very bad shape.
