Fulfill promises on Haiman or quit Assembly, MPs told ‘Kuwait society has lost hope’
KUWAIT CITY, Feb 8: The Green Line Environment Group (GLEG) has called on MPs Khaled Al-Tahoos, Saadoun Hammad and Mohammad Al-Huwaila to either fulfill their promise of questioning authorities about the Um Al-Haiman environment crisis or resign from Parliament during a press conference held by GLEG Chairman Khaled Al-Hajeri.
“We are making these demands, because these MPs vowed to come before the victims of Um Al-Haiman pollution crisis,” stated Al-Hajeri. “Our doors are open to the three MPs and GLEG is ready to provide them various documents and evidence as proof of human rights violations that have been going on in the area for so long.”
“We are also ready to help the MPs write part of the questioning so that they will not have any logical justification to delay it any more. Any further delay would mean an increase in the number of children suffering due to pollution at Um-Al-Haiman,” added Al-Hajeri.
Al-Hajeri also pointed out that the Kuwaiti society has lost hope and confidence in the government and the solution for this crisis is in the hands of Al-Tahoos, Hammad and Al-Huwaila.
“The Green Line Environment Group will not allow any member of Parliament or the government to politically tamper or profit at the expense of children’s health in Um-Al-Haiman. The environmental activists at the group also have the ability to continuously organize campaigns against those who exploit environmental cases for their personal purposes, be they in parliament or in the government or in the public sector.”
Logical
“If the government has succeeded in fooling and convincing the three MPs with what it said during previous parliamentary sessions, which proves how far it is from any logical scientific analysis, then I would like to say these MPs do not deserve to stay in parliament for a minute more.”
“In the event that the MPs refuse to question on the Um-Al-Haiman issue, then their resignation from Parliament is a must because it means they have not fulfilled their promise, they committed perjury, they do not have political will to address the problem, weakened the role of parliamentary legislation when it comes to tackling environmental issues, insulted the Kuwaiti society, abused a case that deals with human rights to attain personal gains, denied and evaded protection concerns which they put forward in their electoral programs, denied the rights of Um-Al-Haiman children who should be provided with a healthy environment like all other children and simply neglected the duty of protecting environment in general.”
“We are also sorry to say that during one of the questioning sessions at the Parliament, we were surprised to hear the irresponsible attitude of one of the MPs while discussing the case of Um-Al-Haiman, Al-Hajeri stated.
“I was surprised that MPs who are not from the 5th Constituency actually spoke on the issue with more sympathy and concern than those who were elected to represent the 5th Constituency.”
