Husband, wife, two kids perish in Jahra flat fire Keep safety gear at home: official

KUWAIT CITY, Jan 10: An Egyptian man in his mid-30s, his 28-year old wife, and two of their children 7 and 4 respectively, died in a fire which erupted at the fourth floor apartment of a building in Jahra. Also, their six-month old baby sustained severe burns, and one firefighter was injured in the rescue operation.
The Director of Public Relations at the Fire Services Department, Lieutenant Colonel Khalil Al-Ameer disclosed the Operations Room received a distress call about the fire around 2:30 am Saturday, while a rescue team arrived at the scene in five minutes.

Rescue
However, the rescue team found the couple and their two children already asphyxiated with their six-month-old baby severely burnt. The baby was rushed to Jahra Hospital for treatment, and was later transferred to Al-Babtain Hospital. Al-Omar added nine other people were rescued from the building.
Meanwhile, Al-Ameer has extended condolences to the bereaved family, while stressing on the need to keep safety equipments in the home, with the necessary steps implemented to avert fire any incidents. He noted most fire deaths occur at night.
He went on to appreciate the efforts exerted by the firefighters and paramedics in dealing with the situation, noting high-ranking officials were present at the scene to supervise the operation.
In another incident, firefighters rushed to Jahra Hospital following an alarm about a fire erupting at the place.
The officers detected it was just a smell of smoke.
Corporal Abdullah Al-Sindlay, who took part in the fire fighting operation, suffered from suffocation and bruises, but his condition was stable.

Safety
Lieut Col Al-Amir stressed on importance of safety awareness among citizens and residents, particularly at bed time, when they should turn off gas valves, electrical appliances and ensure that the house is free of flammable substances or materials.
He advised people to install a smoke detector, also branded as “the night watchman,” for it has proven quite effective in alerting occupants of the house or office of smoke or fire, he added.
The acting director general of the department, Brigadier General Yusuf al-Ansari, and the Director of Fire Department in Al-Jahra Governorate, Lieut Col Mohammad Al-Shatti, were also present at the scene of the fire.
