Stroke the mascara wand along your lashes in an outward swoop with your eyes open, gently closing them to get the most off of the wand.
Move from the inside of your lashes out, making sure not to miss any on the way. To be sure there will be no clumping.  Give the mascara wand a slight wiggle while moving towards the end of the lashes; this will give you the most length and fullness of your lashes.
Apply mascara to the bottom row of lashes, work from the outside in, or the opposite of the way you did on the top row.
